Stampede strings are used to hold your hat on when it's windy. The term comes from the idea that you can hold your hat on in a stampede.

Stampede strings are made of two lengths of braided horsehair each about 20 inches long, plus a 3 inch tassel on the bottom. They are joined together with a sliding knot to adjust under your chin for a tight fit.

An 8 strand square braid is used to make the stampede strings. This allows for a number of different color combinations.
